Marta keeps the extra leaf for the table in the hall closet, standing on its edge behind the vacuum, and she has not taken it out in six years.
She used to need it. Nine people, back when Fridays were at her place and everybody complained about the parking on Larkin Street and came anyway. Her brother Dov and his wife. Her sister. The cousins. Two teenagers who ate like they were being timed. The leaf went in on Thursday night so the cloth would have a day to sit flat.
Then there was the thing at Dov's house. She can tell you what was said, and she can tell you that she has gone over her half of it enough times to be honest about it, and she can tell you that the part she is sorriest for was not even the loudest part. What she cannot tell you is how a bad hour turned into six years. There was no announcement. Nobody declared anything. The Fridays simply moved, and then they were somewhere else, and then there was a season where she found out about a birthday afterward, from a photo.
She called for a while. Then she wrote, twice. Then she stopped, not out of pride, but because there is a point at which continuing to knock starts to feel like something you are doing to yourself.
So now the table sits without its leaf under the window, and on Friday afternoons Marta sets it for two.
The second place is for Colette, who is twenty two and works the desk at the urgent care on the county road and gets off at five. They met in the lot behind the building, in February, when Colette's car would not start and Marta had jumper cables in the trunk from a marriage that ended in a different decade. It took forty minutes. Colette cried once, briefly, about something that was not the car, and then apologized for it about six times.
Colette has no family in this state. She has a mother three time zones west who calls on Sundays and an aunt she does not speak to. She works most weekends. She eats a lot of things out of the microwave in the break room standing up.
Marta sets the good cloth. She roasts vegetables because Colette will eat vegetables if somebody else cooks them and otherwise will not. She puts out the two plates, and there is a moment, most weeks, right when the second plate goes down, where the whole room says the same sentence to her without using words: this used to be nine.
She hears it every time. It is not dramatic. It is just arithmetic, and arithmetic does not care how you feel about it.
At about ten past five there are footsteps on the stairs, because the buzzer has been broken since the spring, and Colette lets herself in with the key Marta gave her in March and says something about the drive, and then she sits down at the second place like it has been hers for years.
Which it has, now. Almost a year of Fridays.
Marta has never once considered that this might be the thing Colette gets through the week on.
What was never in their power
There is a man in Genesis whose family did the most concrete version of this that has ever been done. They did not drift. They did not simply stop calling. They put him in a pit and then sold him, and he went down into Egypt and into a house and then into a prison, and the years stacked up, and nothing about it looked like it was going anywhere good, because for a very long time it was not going anywhere good.
And what he says at the end of it, standing in front of the same brothers, is one of the strangest and steadiest sentences in Scripture.
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass as it is this day, to save much people alive.Genesis 50:20
Read it slowly. He does not say it was not evil. He names it as evil, plainly, out loud, to their faces, and he does not pretend the pit was a garden. He says two things were happening in the same event and only one of them was theirs.
You are the light of the world, and no invitation list has ever had a vote on that. I am not saying that to cheer you up. Matthew 5:14 was spoken over a hillside of people, most of whom were somebody's disappointment, and it is written and it has stood ever since, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a line like that off a page and into a third floor apartment on a Friday afternoon.
Here is the thing families are never told about their own silence. It is powerful. It genuinely hurts and there is no version of this where anybody tells you it does not. But it is powerful over the calendar, over the photographs, over who hears about the birthday. It has never once been powerful over the source.
You have the same light in a room of two that you had in a room of nine. The written word does not scale it by attendance anywhere: it is God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness who has shined in our hearts, 2 Corinthians 4:6, and He did the shining, so a headcount cannot adjust it. The Spirit is not waiting for the room to fill back up before He agrees with that.
And one plain thing here, said out loud rather than tucked in a footnote. If what is happening around you has stopped being coldness and started being danger, please tell somebody today who can actually help you. Staying is not the holy option when you are not safe, and walking out of a room would never put you out.
A table for two is a table
Now, the arithmetic. Two is smaller than nine. That is true and it is not the interesting part.
The interesting part is what a table is for. A table is not a scoreboard. A table is a flat surface with food on it where somebody who has been standing up in a break room all week gets to sit down across from a person who knows their name and expects them.
Nine people can sit at a table and nobody there needs it. Two people can sit at a table and one of them is being held together by it.
You were never put out. You were relocated, and the flame came with you. Psalm 18:28 is written in the first person and it is worth having: for thou wilt light my candle, the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. And the same Spirit who inspired that line is in the apartment while the vegetables are in the oven, saying it again, over a woman who took the leaf out of the table six years ago.
None of which asks you to do a thing about the nine. You are not being sent to fix your family. You are not responsible for a silence you did not build, you do not owe anybody a knock on a door, and nothing here is going to turn into an assignment three paragraphs from now.
You are already carrying the same light down a hallway that used to lead to a fuller table. Isaiah 60:1 says the light is come and the glory of the LORD is risen upon you, written, past tense, done, and the Spirit does not argue that into a person. He seats it, quietly, in the ten minutes before the footsteps on the stairs.
So here is the turn, and it does not require a phone call.
It is already settled, and it was settled before anybody stopped calling. Genesis 50:20 has a man saying they meant it and God meant otherwise, both true, both written, and the Holy Spirit is in your kitchen to agree with that over you rather than to hand you a repair job on a family.
Which means the ache and the fact can live in the same week without one of them canceling the other. Marta can miss nine people on a Friday afternoon and be the reason a twenty two year old sits down at five ten and lets her shoulders drop. Joseph wept out loud in front of his brothers, more than once, and told them God meant it unto good in the same conversation. Nobody made him choose.
You are lit by Christ, and six years of silence has no right to stay on your face. Colossians 1:13 is written and it says He has delivered you and translated you into the kingdom of His dear Son, done and behind you, and His Spirit is the witness who signs that over to you personally, in your own name, at your own table.
The leaf can stay in the closet. It is not a verdict on you. It is a piece of wood.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen while the oven is on. You are not generating this authority yourself. It is Christ's, and it is yours because Christ is in you and you are in Christ, and that is the only reason a person gets to speak this way at all. What comes of it belongs to Him, and He answers as He sees fit, in His own way and in His timing. Your part is simply to say what is already true.
- Table set for two on a Friday evening, you are not a demotion. Genesis 50:20 says they meant one thing and God meant it unto good, and that was settled long before anybody stopped calling. I am lit by Christ, and I always was.
- Verdict that I am the problem, get out in the name of Jesus. You have had six years of quiet Fridays to make yourself sound like the truth, and 2 Corinthians 4:6 says the shining was God's doing and never mine to earn. I am light in the Lord in a room of two.
- Lord, You are the God who meant it unto good while it was still going wrong. Your word said that first and Your Spirit is saying it again over a table by a window with the oven on. I am setting two places tonight and I am not counting the empty chairs.
