Light Already Given1 Peter 2:9

I Thought I Was The Furniture

This message is for standing at a Sunday welcome desk handing out programs, certain that everybody who walks past you is the actual light and you are the furniture

The programs are still warm when Carol lifts them out of the box, and she likes that, the small heat of a thing just finished by somebody else. Twenty to nine. The foyer smells of the coffee urn and of rain coming off everybody's coats.

She squares the stack against the edge of the desk. She stands the pens up in the jar. She turns her lanyard the right way around, because it flips, and it has flipped every Sunday for eleven years.

Then the doors start going.

Dev comes through first with his guitar on his back and a case of in-ear monitors under his arm, walking fast the way he walks when the band is late. He takes a program he is never going to read and says something kind about her coat.

Mrs. Antonelli next, who stands down front after every service and prays with whoever comes, and who once prayed with a man for forty minutes while the youth group stacked chairs around the pair of them. She takes a program and pats the desk twice. That is her whole hello and it has been for years.

Then Ray, who drives out to the county jail every Tuesday morning and has been doing it longer than Carol has been at this desk.

Then a family with three kids, and the middle one takes three programs, and Carol lets her.

Then a woman Carol has never seen, standing just inside the door with her car keys still in her hand, doing the arithmetic people do in a lobby when they are deciding whether to stay. Carol comes out from behind the desk and walks her over to the corner where the restrooms are, rather than pointing, because pointing is not the same thing.

At nine the music starts on the other side of the wall and the foyer empties in about ninety seconds, the way it always does.

Carol squares the leftovers. Refills the jar. Wipes the ring the urn left on the table. Sits down on the stool.

Through the wall, four hundred people singing. Out here, one woman and an empty door.

That afternoon she is on the phone with her sister, and it comes out sideways, the way the heaviest things always do.

"Every single person who walks past that desk is the light," she says. "Every one of them. Dev, Rosa, Ray. And I am the furniture. I am the thing the light gets handed out on."

Her sister says something kind, and Carol says oh, honestly, I do not mind it, and asks about the weather up there.

She is standing at her kitchen sink while she says it. It is a little after four. The window over that sink faces west. The sun is coming through it and it is all over her, from the crown of her head down to the tile.

Look at who Peter was writing to

The letter that famous sentence sits in did not go out to a stage.

It went to people scattered across five provinces of what is now Turkey, and Peter says as much in the first line. Displaced people. Household workers with no say in the house. Women married to men who wanted nothing to do with any of it. A crowd with no standing in their towns. Not one of them had a platform, a following, or a Tuesday ministry at the county jail.

And this is the sentence he sent them.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.1 Peter 2:9

Read the first half again slowly and count how many verbs anybody in it is being asked to perform. There are none. Chosen. Royal. Holy. His. Four flat statements of what those people already were, on a morning when not one of them felt like any of it, delivered before a single result had come in from anywhere.

You are a chosen people and a royal priesthood, and that was settled about you long before you ever stood behind a desk. I am not saying it to warm you up. 1 Peter 2:9 puts every one of those words in the plain present tense, written down and standing, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a written line like that across two thousand years and sets it down in a church foyer at twenty to nine on a wet morning.

The word chosen is the one that gets misread. It sounds like a ranking, as though somebody went down the roster and picked. It is not a ranking. In that sentence it describes how a person got where they are, and the one who did the choosing is named right there in the verse, and it is not the reader.

Then comes the clause carrying the whole weight of it. Called you out of darkness. Called. Out of. By a voice that was not yours.

You were called out of the dark by name, and the calling was not a reward for how the eleven years went. That is the written word's own account of how anybody ended up in the light at all: God called, and they came out. The Spirit does not hand that to you as a standard to be met. He seats it in you as something that has already happened and cannot un-happen.

The house includes the foyer

There is a picture Jesus uses that everybody knows the first half of.

A lamp is lit, and nobody lights a lamp in order to put it under a basket. It goes on a stand. And then comes the line people skip, which is that from the stand it gives light to everyone in the house.

Everyone in the house. Not everyone in the best room of the house.

Carol has quietly divided her building into a sanctuary, where the actual thing happens, and a foyer, which is the hallway you walk down to reach it. Almost everybody does this with wherever they are standing. There is the real room, and there is the room I happen to be in, and the two are never the same room.

You are lit in the room you are actually standing in, and there is no second, better-lit room where the genuine article is kept. Matthew 5:15 says the lamp is set where it gives light to everyone in the house, which is written down and settled, and it is the Spirit and not your square footage who makes a sentence like that true of somebody wiping a table down beside a coffee urn.

Notice what a lamp is not doing while it does that. It is not aiming. It is not deciding which people in the house deserve the light. It is not comparing its output to the lamp in the next room and finding itself behind. A lit thing is simply lit, and the whole house benefits from an arrangement the lamp had no hand in.

You have the light already, and you were never asked to generate one watt of it. His word puts the source outside the person from the first clause of that verse to the last, and the same Spirit who lit it is the one keeping it lit, which is exactly why a slow Sunday and an empty foyer cannot put it out.

Now, I want to be careful with you here, because there is a cheap move available and I am not going to make it.

I am not about to tell you that you are secretly the most important person in the building. That would only be the same measuring contest with you moved up a few places, and you would be back at the bottom of it by Thursday. The point is not that the welcome desk outranks the platform. The point is that the light was never distributed by rank, and the contest you have been losing was never running.

The breakthrough

So here is what is not coming next.

There is no turn in this. There is no place a little further down where the fact quietly becomes a task and you get handed a way to live up to it. No target. No count. Nothing to say to anybody at that desk next Sunday. No schedule, no streak, no better version of the morning.

You have nothing at all to take up out of this, because the thing being handed to you was already yours before you opened it. The word said it first, in the tense of a thing already finished, and what the Spirit adds today is only that it is about you, and not about somebody better placed in the building.

That is worth sitting with for a second, because the reflex is strong. Twenty seconds after a person hears they are already something, they start hunting for the assignment attached, since in their experience there is always one. There is not one here. The verse hands over four nouns and a rescue, and then it stops.

And the sentence you said at your kitchen sink is not the verdict on you. It is the arithmetic of a tired afternoon, and it is wrong, and it is allowed to be wrong.

You are not the furniture. You are the one God called out of the dark, and He used your own name to do it. That is written in 1 Peter 2:9, in a letter addressed to people with far less standing than you, and the Spirit is agreeing with it right now, in the room you happen to be sitting in.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at whatever volume your kitchen allows. The right to speak to a thing this way is not a technique and it is not confidence. It is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority underneath these words is His and never your own; the Holy Spirit is what makes them live, not the strength of your voice. So say them plainly, and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Welcome desk on a Sunday morning, you are not the place where I get measured. You are one room in a house that is already lit, and God set the lamp there, not me. His word says He called me out of darkness into His wonderful light, and that was true of me at twenty to nine.
  2. Idea that I am the furniture, get out. In the name of Jesus you do not get another eleven years in my chest, because Scripture gives the calling and the light both to God and never once to me. I am the glass, and the glass was never asked to be the sun.
  3. Lord, You called me out of the dark and You used my name to do it, and I am not going to stand at my own sink and argue with You about it. I thank You that the lamp is Yours, the house is Yours, and the foyer is part of the house. I am standing in Your light this afternoon because You are the One who put me in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
