The tables go up on the sand at the end of Ferry Road every year on the last Saturday before the schools go back, and every year somebody says, Nadine, say something for us.
She has been saying something for nineteen years.
She is good at it. That is the trouble, and she knows it is the trouble, and there has never been a moment when saying so would not have sounded like fishing. She can find the one sentence a hundred and forty people at folding tables actually need at half past six in the evening with the light going orange over the water and the foil trays sweating. She can make the old ones laugh and the teenagers stop looking at their phones. She has done the graveside for two of her uncles. She did the toast when Ruth retired from the school. She did the blessing at the picnic the year it rained and everybody crammed under the awning and she had to shout it, and people still bring that one up.
This year she came late on purpose.
She parked up on the road and sat in the car for eleven minutes with the engine off, listening to the gathering already going, the pans clattering, somebody's speaker playing something too loud, a kid screaming with joy in the shallows. She thought, I will just eat. I will sit at the end with Winnie and eat and not be anybody.
She got as far as the second table.
Nadine. Come on. Say something for us.
And she smiled, because she loves them and because she has never once not smiled, and she took the little handheld microphone with the tape around the base, and she said something. It was good. It was about her uncle and the year the boats did not come in and her mother feeding nine people out of one pot. People went quiet in the right place. A woman she does not know well wiped her eyes.
Then she sat down at the end of the table beside Winnie and put a paper plate on her knees and did not eat any of it.
Winnie said, that was lovely.
Nadine said, thanks.
And under her ribs, where she does not go very often, a thought was sitting there that she has never said to one living person and would rather chew glass than say now. It is not that she is tired, although she is tired. It is not that she wants somebody else to be asked, although some years she has wanted that so badly it frightened her.
It is this: if I stop doing this, the light goes out.
Not the light in the room. The light in her. She has a low, quiet, permanent suspicion that whatever God put in her is the sort of thing that runs on being asked, and that the day the microphone goes to somebody else is the day the thing goes dark and she finds out it was never really hers.
The sun went all the way down behind the point while she sat there. Somebody started the fire in the pit. The kid in the shallows was still screaming with joy.
What got attached to the sentence
Nobody did this to her on purpose.
That has to be said first, because the easy version of this message is to go after the people who kept asking, and the easy version is wrong. They asked because she is good at it and because it helped and because she loves them and they know it. Every single request was a compliment. Not one of them was a bill. The people at those tables would be genuinely horrified to learn what has been sitting under her ribs for nineteen years, and if you told them they had put it there they would not know what you were talking about, and they would be right.
Here is what actually happened, and it happens quietly and it happens to the most willing people in every room.
A fact got laminated to a performance. Somewhere in there, the true thing about her, which is a fact about what God did, got attached to the observable thing about her, which is what she does with a microphone at half past six. And once two things are laminated, you cannot remove one without expecting the other to come away with it.
You are the light of the world, and you were the light of the world in the eleven minutes you sat in the car with the engine off. That is not a compliment on your usefulness. Jesus said it in Matthew 5:14 to a hillside of people who had never once been handed a microphone and never would be, and it is written, and the writing does not have a clause about frequency. The Holy Spirit is not counting your appearances, and He never started.
There is a line Paul wrote to a church that had picked up a whole apparatus of religious measurement, and it is one of the most freeing sentences in Scripture precisely because of how flatly it is worded.
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days.Colossians 2:16
Let no man judge you. Not, let no man judge you unfairly. Not, let no man judge you unless he is nice about it. The whole category of human assessment gets set aside, and the reason he gives in the next breath is that all of that was a shadow, and the substance is Christ.
You have a standing that no gathering issued and no gathering can revoke. Colossians 2:17 says the substance is Christ, and that is written down and it is not a metaphor about confidence. The Spirit does not take a vote at the end of the evening. He seats what the word already said, in a woman on a folding chair with an untouched paper plate on her knees.
What the sentence never said
Now hold the sentence up and look at what is actually in it, because this is the correction and it does the whole job.
A lamp gives light by being lit and by being in the room. That is the entire mechanism. Matthew 5:15 says a lamp is not lit and then put under a basket, it is set on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. There is no instruction to the lamp anywhere in the passage. The lamp is not asked to project, to prepare, to find the one sentence a hundred and forty people need, or to be good at anything. It is asked to be lit, which is a thing done to it, and to be there, which it already is.
So the nineteen years were not fake. Read that carefully. Every one of those talks was real and God used them and the woman who wiped her eyes was not wrong. This is not a message that comes along and tells you the good thing you did was a performance and now you must stop. That would just be a new demand wearing quieter clothes, and this site does not deal in those.
You are lit, and you were lit the whole time, and the talks were an overflow and never the tap. John 8:12 says Jesus is the light of the world, and Matthew 5:14 says the same sentence over you, and both are written and the order between them is the whole thing. The word said it first. The Spirit says it again, tonight, on the sand, with the fire going in the pit.
Which means the suspicion under her ribs is answerable. If she never speaks at that gathering again, nothing goes out. If she speaks at the next nineteen, nothing gets brighter. Both of those are true at once and neither one is a hint about what she should do next.
So here is the turn.
The fear under her ribs is not silly and it is not sin. It is a reasonable conclusion from nineteen years of evidence that only ever measured one thing. But it is answering a question with the wrong instrument, and the reading it produced was always going to be wrong.
It is already settled, and it was settled before the first time anybody said your name across a beach. Colossians 2:10 says you are complete in Him, and complete is not a word with a scale under it. The Spirit is not building toward that, and He is not maintaining it either. He is agreeing with what was written, in you, in the chair, right now.
Nothing is being taken away from her. Nobody is telling her to hand the microphone to somebody else, and nobody is telling her to keep it. That decision belongs to her and to the room and to no message on any page. What is being taken away is the lamination. The fact comes off the performance, and the fact stays.
You are free to sit down at the end of the table and eat the food on the plate. Colossians 2:16 already said let no man judge you, and the sentence has been standing there in the written word the entire nineteen years, and it does not exempt the man in your own head. The same Spirit who lit this is holding it lit while you are chewing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car with the engine off if that is where you are. The authority in them is not the authority of a good speaker, and it does not go up when the talk lands well. It is Christ's, and it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is a thing His word settled about you and not a thing your nineteen years earned. What He does with any evening He does in His own way, and the outcome is His. Your part is to say back what was written first.
- Microphone at the beach gathering, you are not the switch. Colossians 2:16 says let no man judge me, and the light in this room was lit by Christ and not by my nineteen years of standing up. I am sitting down and it stays lit.
- Fear that the light goes out, get out, in the name of Jesus. You have been telling me since I was young that the room stays lit because I stand up in it, and the written word says the substance is Christ. He lit this and He is the One keeping it lit.
- Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world, and Your word says that sentence over me and never once put a schedule beside it. I am not carrying the room tonight. I am eating what is on the plate and letting You be the light You already are in me.
Colossians 2:16
