Handed The Week At The Door

It was a good sermon. That has to be said first, because Faye would say it first.

It was warm and it was true and the man who preached it was not performing. He has been at that church longer than she has, and when he talks about people who do not know Jesus his voice does a thing that cannot be faked, and Faye has watched him sit in a hospital corridor at two in the morning for a family that was not even his congregation.

At the end of it he said, gently, that this week we could each look for five. Just five. That is not many, he said, and he smiled, and the room made the warm noise a room makes.

Faye is forty-four and has been at that church twenty-two years.

She got up at the last song, because she likes to be near the door, and now she is in the porch with one arm in her coat and the rain coming off the edge of the roof in a rope. There is a folding table with leftover paper cups on it. Somebody's grandson is jumping off the concrete step and back up again, over and over, with enormous seriousness. Ellis, who is eighty, has the tin of mints out and is working the crowd with it.

The preacher gets to her, shakes her hand with both of his, and says, "Big week ahead, Faye." He means it kindly. He means it entirely kindly, and he would be horrified to know what it did.

Because between the porch and the car, the week stops being days.

She unlocks the car, sits down, does not start it. Five. Monday to Friday, that is one a day, and she goes looking for the first one and finds the woman on the checkout at the store who is always nice about the bags, and the man who walks the beagle past her fence at seven. That is two people she does not really know and one week she has not lived yet, and there is already a shortfall.

And underneath that, the thing she would never say out loud in that building, because everybody in it is kind and nobody deserves it: she is tired. Not of God. She is tired the specific way a person gets tired when the same arithmetic has run in her every Sunday for two decades. And on top of the tiredness sits the guilt about the tiredness, which is heavier than the tiredness.

Then somebody taps the window.

It is Ruth, whose car is in the shop again, and could she possibly. So Ruth gets in, and for eleven minutes on the way to Dalton Road she talks about her sister, and the diagnosis, and the way her brother in law goes quiet in a crisis, and Faye says almost nothing and drives slowly.

God does not come up once.

At the gate Ruth gets out, and stops, and says through the open door, "That is the first normal conversation I have had in about three weeks." Then she runs through the rain to her porch.

Faye drives home. The number five is still sitting in the passenger seat where Ruth was.

Read what rest actually is in that verse

There is a line in Hebrews that people quote at exhausted people, and it is nearly always quoted for the wrong reason.

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.Hebrews 4:10

The shocking part is at the end. As God did from his.

Think about what God's rest on the seventh day was. He was not recovering. Nothing was depleted, nothing needed topping up, no divine energy had been spent that had to be gotten back. He stopped for one reason: the thing was finished. Rest in this verse is not the posture of somebody who is worn out. It is the posture of somebody standing in front of completed work with nothing left to add to it.

That is the rest the verse says you have entered.

You have entered a rest that stands on finished work and not on your recovery. Hebrews 4:10 puts both verbs in the past, entered and ceased, and the written word leaves them there. The Spirit is not offering you a lighter schedule as a consolation. He is telling you which room you are already standing in.

And look at the middle clause, which is the one that gets read too fast. Ceased from his own works. Not from work. From his own works. Those are two entirely different things, and the whole verse turns on the difference.

His own works are the ones a person does to establish something that is not yet established. The ones that answer a question still open. Nobody polishes a floor to prove the house is theirs once the keys are in their hand.

You are already inside the finished thing, and you were carried in rather than admitted on results. That is written, in that order, in Hebrews 4:10, and His Spirit is the seal on it rather than the supervisor of it.

The sentence never had a number in it

Now let me say the careful thing, and I want to say it properly.

Every person who ever handed you a figure meant it well. That preacher in the porch loves people, and he is worried about them, and worry like that is not a sin. It is the shape love takes in a man who has sat in hospital corridors at two in the morning. God is not embarrassed by anybody's urgency, and neither am I, and this is not the article where we go after the church that raised you.

But watch what a number does to a fact.

Ye are the light of the world is a statement. There is no verb in it that anybody is being asked to perform. It is the same grammar as she is his mother, or this is a Tuesday. Jesus said it, sitting down, to a hillside of people whose combined record of persuading anybody of anything was, at that exact moment, zero.

Staple a figure to a sentence like that and the grammar quietly changes underneath everybody's feet. Now the fact reads as an instruction, and an instruction has a completion rate, and a completion rate means a person can be behind on being who they already are. Nobody intended that. It happens anyway, in the twelve steps between the porch and the car.

You are the light of the world, and there has never once been a figure attached to that sentence. Matthew 5:14 is a plain description of who those people were, and the written word keeps it in that grammar from the first word to the last. What the Spirit adds is that nobody has quietly amended it since.

And I am not going to hand you a smaller one. That is the move you are braced for, and it is the one that does the most damage, because a gentle target is still a target and you would carry it home the same way. Not five. Not one. Not just be a light where you are, which sounds like mercy and works like arithmetic.

You have ceased from your own works, and that is finished business rather than a permission slip you keep having to renew. Hebrews 4:10 says entered and ceased, both of them completed and neither of them provisional, and His Spirit is not standing behind you with a stopwatch to see whether you meant it.
