The Card I Left Blank

The foyer of the Highfield Center at twenty to five on a Sunday in April smells like carpet and coffee urns, and Bridget Moore is standing by the coat racks with a card in her hand.

It is a good card. Someone put real thought into it. Heavy stock, warm color, one line of text at the top in a font somebody chose on purpose: WHO WILL YOU SPEAK TO THIS MONTH? Under it, three ruled lines. Under those, a small box for the date.

The weekend has been good too. That is the part she will not be able to explain to anybody in the car. Two days of singing she meant, a Saturday session on Psalm 34 that undid something in her chest, a woman at her table on Sunday morning who prayed for her mother by name and got it exactly right without being told. Bridget came here empty and she is not empty. That is all true.

And she is standing by the coat racks with a pen in one hand and a card in the other, and the three lines are looking back at her.

She tries. She genuinely tries. She runs through her days the way you run through a wallet you have already searched twice. There is Denise at work, who does not want it, and Bridget knows that the way you know weather. There is her brother, and they have one good thing left between them and it is football, and she is not going to spend it. There is the man at the counter of the place she gets gas, who she has spoken to perhaps forty times about traffic. There is her neighbor with the dog.

She can put a name on line one. She knows she can. She can put three names on three lines and hand the card in and get the smile.

The volunteer collecting them is a young woman with a lanyard, and her name is Cass, and she is lovely. She is holding a basket and thanking people and she means every word of it. Nobody in this building is doing anything wrong. That is what makes it so difficult to explain.

Bridget folds the card in half. She puts it in her coat pocket and she picks up her bag and she says thank you, it was wonderful, to Cass, and she means that too. Then she walks out to the parking lot in the four o'clock light and sits in her car for a minute without starting it.

It is November now. The card is still in the pocket of that coat. She has taken it out twice and looked at it and put it back, and both times the thought that arrived was the same one, arriving in her own voice, absolutely level and without any drama at all:

Whatever that sentence means about a light and a city and a lampstand, it does not mean me. Because if it meant me, the lines would not still be empty.

The sentence is not a job description

Start with what is actually written, because the whole weight of this rests on a grammar most of us have never been shown.

When Jesus said it, He used the indicative and not the imperative. That is not a technicality. Greek, like English, can tell the difference between describing and commanding, and Matthew 5:14 describes. Ye are. Not ye must be, not ye should try to be, not ye will be if the month goes well. He is not assigning work to that hillside. He is telling them what happened to them.

You are the light of the world, and that was as true of you in the parking lot with a blank card in your coat as it was of anybody who filled theirs in. I am not softening anything to be kind. Matthew 5:14 has no conditions written into it anywhere, and the Holy Spirit does not read it with conditions He invented. He reads it as it stands and He seats it in whoever is listening.

Paul is even blunter about what happens when a finished thing gets turned back into a requirement.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Galatians 5:1

Look at the word yoke. A yoke is a thing laid across shoulders so that something can be pulled. It is not evil. It is equipment. And Paul's whole point is that the Galatians had a finished freedom and were letting equipment be laid back on top of it, not by villains, but by sincere people with real convictions who genuinely believed they were helping.

You were made free, and the freedom did not arrive on a probationary basis. Galatians 5:1 puts the making in the past tense and the standing in the present, and it never once puts the freedom itself back on the table. The Spirit is not the auditor of that arrangement. He is the one who holds you upright inside it.

Nobody handed the hillside a card

It matters enormously that everybody in this story is good.

Cass with the lanyard is good. The person who chose that font is good. The speaker who asked the room to think about somebody in their week meant every syllable of it and was moved himself while he said it. A hall full of people wanted more of God at the end of that weekend and that is a beautiful thing, and the card was somebody's honest attempt to help the wanting survive the drive home.

So this is not a case against them. It is a case for reading the sentence the way it was written, which is what actually protects everybody, including the people printing cards.

Because look at what the hillside got. No card. No lines. No date box. Fishermen, farmers, a tax collector, people who had walked in from villages with nothing to their names, and what He handed them was not a task but a fact about themselves that had already happened. He did go on to talk about a lamp and a stand, but read that closely too: the lamp is not instructed to burn harder. It is simply not covered up, and the whole picture assumes the burning as a given.

You have a freedom here that does not depend on anything getting filled in. It is written in Galatians 5:1 that Christ made us free, and the Spirit does not hand you back a smaller version of the same yoke with a gentler name on it. He does not swap a quota for a softer quota. He undoes the entanglement.

And I want to be careful here, because the thing I could do next is the very thing Paul is warning about. I could say: no targets, just be present with people. Just be warm. Just make sure you are available. And every one of those is a line with a ruled edge under it, and by Tuesday you would be grading yourself on presence instead of names, and the pocket would have a new card in it.

You are not being handed a replacement. Matthew 5:14 does not need one, because a statement of fact has no vacancy for a task to fill, and what the Spirit does with a statement like that is not to add to it. He settles it.
