Light Already GivenPsalm 18:28

The Sea Road At Half Past Six

This message is for walking the dog on the sea road at half past six in the dark with a head full of a sentence you have carried since you were eleven and never once believed about yourself

The sea road at half past six in January is not really a road. It is a set of sounds. Gravel for the first two hundred yards, then the change to blacktop where the county resurfaced it, then the hollow stretch over the culvert that Sailor always hurries across because he does not like the noise underneath him.

Maura carries the flashlight and hardly ever switches it on. Her eyes come around by the second bend, and after that there is enough. The harbor light doing its slow turn out past the point. One window lit above the boat shed, where somebody is up early with a baby. The cold blue of a phone screen inside a parked van, where the man who drives the morning delivery run sits for ten minutes before his shift, because those are the only ten minutes of the day that belong to him.

Sailor pulls left at the boat ramp. He always pulls left at the boat ramp.

And somewhere between the culvert and the ramp, the sentence arrives. It arrives most mornings. She was eleven the first time she got it, at a summer club in a church hall that smelled of floor wax, where they cut candles out of yellow paper and wrote their names on them and pinned them to a board shaped like a hill. A woman with a soft voice read out that you are the light of the world.

Maura still has the paper candle. It lives in the kitchen drawer with the spare keys and the batteries.

She has spent fifty years holding herself up against that sentence and coming away short, and she would tell you so herself, plainly, with no drama in it at all. She raised three. She worked the front desk at the doctor's office for twenty-two years. She takes a dog along a wet road in the dark. Nobody was ever converted. Nobody ever wrote to say anything. She has never once, not for a single morning of fifty years, believed that sentence had her name on it, whatever the yellow paper said.

At the ramp she turns and comes back the way she came, and the wind is behind her now, and Sailor stops caring about the culvert.

And here is the part she has never noticed, because nobody notices this about themselves.

The man in the parked van has watched her go by that ramp every morning for four years. He does not know her name. He has never once spoken to her. On the mornings she is not there, because of the flu or the ice or a hospital appointment, he notices, and it puts a small wrong note through the whole of his day, and he could not tell you why if you asked him.

What the harbor light is actually doing

Stand on that road long enough and you notice something about the light out past the point.

It does not strain. It does not check whether anybody can see it. It turns, and it is lit, and those are two different facts about it. The turning is what it does. The being lit is what it is. And the second one was true before the first one started, because somebody built it and somebody supplied it and somebody closed a circuit that the light itself has no access to.

Psalm 18 is a soldier's song. It was written by a man who spent an enormous amount of his life in the dark and most of it running, and in the middle of all that weather he says one small domestic thing that has nothing to do with battle at all.

For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.Psalm 18:28

Look at where the verb sits. He does not say I keep my candle lit. He does not say he is working on his candle, or that his candle is coming along. The lighting is God's action, and the candle is the thing being acted on, and David seems entirely content to be the candle.

You are the candle in that sentence, and you were the candle a long time before you read it. I am not saying that to lift your mood. Psalm 18:28 puts the lighting in God's hands and leaves it there, it is written and it has not shifted, and the Spirit is what carries a written line like that across three thousand years and sets it down on a wet road at half past six in January.

There is a way of reading the Bible that turns every single sentence into a lever. Someone hands you a fact and your hands go straight to it looking for the handle, because you were taught that a fact about you is really an instruction wearing a friendlier coat. So the sentence about light arrives, and you start pulling, and fifty years go by.

You have a supply you did not install, and it has been running the whole time you were checking yourself against the meter. That is not flattery, because it is not about you at all. Colossians 1:27 calls it Christ in you, which is a phrase so ordinary in church that most of us have stopped hearing what it says: the source moved in. The Holy Spirit does not argue anybody into that. He seats it, quietly, usually while you are doing something entirely else, like clipping a leash onto a dog.

Fifty years of holding yourself up against it

When Jesus said it on the hillside, He was not handing out a target.

Look at the room He said it in. Matthew 5 has Him sitting down in front of a crowd that had walked out of small towns that morning, people with animals to get back to, mothers with children on their hips, a few who came for the free opinion and stayed for the weather. Not one of them had a result to report. Nobody in that crowd had done anything about anything yet. He looked at all of them, in exactly that condition, and said the sentence.

Which tells you what kind of sentence it is. It is not a job description handed to promising candidates. It is a piece of information about what had already happened to them, because He had arrived.

Maura has been reading it as a performance review since she was eleven. That is not a failing in her. It is what happens to a fact when it gets printed on a banner and read out at the end of a talk about doing more. The fact underneath is unharmed. It just gets buried under the applications.

You were included in that sentence on the hillside, and you were included before a single result came in. Matthew 5:14 is a statement with no verb in it that anybody has to perform, and the same Spirit who moved on the men who wrote it down is the One who makes it land on a person who is convinced it belongs to somebody more useful.

And notice what the sentence is not. It is not a compliment about your personality. It does not say you are naturally warm, or unusually good with people, or secretly remarkable underneath all the ordinariness. If it said any of those things it would be a lie about most of us, and it would collapse on the first bad week.

You have been handed the one thing that does not depend on the week you are having. Scripture puts the light in Christ and then puts Christ in you, so the flame is His and the vessel is yours, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over the vessel with a clipboard. He is filling it.

The breakthrough

So here is what there is to receive this morning, and it is not a plan.

The sentence you have carried since you were eleven was never a set of instructions you have been failing to carry out. It was a description. It described a condition God had already put you in, and it was spoken over a hillside of nobodies, and you were standing in that crowd whether or not you have ever felt like it.

You are the light of the world, and there is nothing on the far side of that sentence for you to go and start doing. That is not my kindness talking. Jesus said it in Matthew 5:14 over people who had produced nothing at all, the written word has held it steady ever since, and what the Spirit adds this morning is only that the sentence is about you.

You do not have to feel lit. The pool lights do not feel anything at twenty to six.

You have nothing to prove on that road, and you were never asked to prove anything on it. The word said it first, over a crowd, plainly. The Spirit says it again now, in whatever room you are standing in, at whatever hour this reaches you.

Take the paper candle out of the drawer if you still have it. Do not put it back with an apology.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the road or in the kitchen, at whatever volume this morning allows. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not yours by effort. It is Christ's, and Christ is in you, so the words are His and they have been given to you to say. What the morning does with them afterward is His to decide, and He answers as He sees, in His own way and His own timing. Your part is only to say what is already true.

  1. Sea road at half past six, you are not my measure. The Lord my God lights my candle, and Psalm 18:28 settled that before I ever set foot on you. I am walking you lit.
  2. Verdict I passed on myself at eleven, get out, in the name of Jesus. You are not Scripture and you never were. Christ is in me and the flame is His, and that is the only reading of me that stands.
  3. Lord, You are the One who lights my candle, and You said it over a hillside of nobodies before one of them had done a thing about it. Your word holds it and Your Spirit says it again on this road. I am going out at half past six carrying what You have already given me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
