No Longer HiddenExodus 4:10

Since A Tuesday In 1989

This message is for a man who has not said one word in a room of more than four people since a Tuesday in 1989 when he tried

The window over Warren Pike's workbench faces southwest, so from about two in the afternoon in January until the sun drops behind Cutler's woods, the whole bench is lit up gold and every bit of dust in the air shows. Warren is sixty two. He has a carburetor apart on a shop towel, the little parts laid out left to right in the order they came off, which is how he has done it since he was nineteen.

The kerosene heater ticks. The radio is on low and has been on the same station since the Reagan administration.

Warren talks fine. That is the thing people get wrong about him. One on one, at the bench, he will talk for an hour about float levels and the year Ford quit making a part worth having. Three men in the shop, four counting him, and he is right in it. His wife Judy says he is the funniest man she knows and she has been saying that for thirty nine years.

Five people in a room and Warren Pike does not say a word.

That has been true since a Tuesday in February of 1989. There was an annual meeting at the grange hall on Route 12, sixty some people on folding chairs, and it was about the drying fees, and Warren had worked it out on the back of an envelope at his own kitchen table for three nights running because he knew he was right and he knew nobody else was going to say it.

So he stood up.

He got three words out. Then his throat did the thing throats do, closed up on him like a valve, and the room got very quiet the way a room does, and he stood there for what he remembers as a very long time and was probably four seconds. And somebody near the back laughed. One laugh. Not even a cruel one, most likely. Probably a nervous man who did not know what else to do with his own discomfort.

Warren sat down. Judy put her hand on his knee. The meeting went on and the fees went up and he was right about all of it and nobody ever knew.

That was thirty seven years ago. He has been to a hundred rooms since. Funerals, school programs, a nephew's wedding, the hospital waiting room the night his brother had the stroke, two more annual meetings before he quit going. He has not said one word out loud in any room with more than four people in it since that Tuesday.

He does not tell people this. There is no reason to. It is not a tragedy and he would be embarrassed to hear it called one. He has a good life, a good shop, a wife who thinks he is funny, and a bench full of gold light on a winter afternoon.

But sometimes, like right now, with a carburetor in pieces and the heater ticking, he thinks about how a whole man can get folded up and put away over four seconds in a grange hall, and how nobody would even know where to look for him.

Who hath made man's mouth

There is a man at a bush in Exodus who does not want to go, and he gives God his reason, and it is not a dodge. It is the truest thing he knows about himself.

And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.Exodus 4:10

Now watch how God answers, because it is not what anybody expects. He does not say Moses, you are being hard on yourself. He does not fix the tongue on the spot. He does not argue with the man's assessment of his own mouth at all.

He asks a question. Who hath made man's mouth.

You are carrying a mouth that was made on purpose, by the One who makes mouths, and He was not guessing when He made it. I am not putting a shine on a hard thing. Exodus 4:11 puts that question in the written word with no answer attached, because the question was the answer. And the Holy Spirit does not stand over a slow tongue with a stopwatch. He made it, and He has never once regretted the work.

That is a different thing than being told your weakness is secretly a strength. God did not tell Moses that. He never called the slowness good and He never called it a defect either. He said He made the mouth, which puts the whole business of what that mouth is worth on the Maker and takes it off the man.

You have been seen the whole time, and the seeing never cost you a single word. Genesis 16:13 has a woman in the desert calling Him the God who sees, and it is written down that way because she was the least visible person in that story and He found her anyway. The Spirit did not need you to speak in order to locate you. He has been at that bench the whole afternoon.

A city on a hill is not doing anything

Here is the line people quote at quiet men, and I want you to look at what it actually says.

A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. That is Matthew 5:14, second half, and the grammar of it is worth the whole article. The city is not shining. The city is not performing. The city is not standing up at a meeting. The city is sitting exactly where it is, doing what a city does, which is exist, and the being seen is happening to it rather than by it.

It cannot be hid. Passive. Somebody else put it on the hill.

You were never hidden, and there is no act you were supposed to stage in order to stop being. Matthew 5:14 says a city on a hill cannot be hid, and the written word does not hand the city a task anywhere in the sentence. What the Spirit adds, in a workshop at two forty on a January afternoon, is that He is not asking you to arrange a demonstration of anything.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this teaching that would go straight for a man like Warren and tell him his quiet is fear and his privacy is cowardice and it is time to get up in a room. That is not what I am here to say and it is not what the text says.

Some men are quiet because something happened. Some are quiet because that is how they were made. Some have reasons for staying out of view that they have never told anybody and do not owe anybody. None of that is hiding from God, and none of it is a debt.

This is yours: a workbench, a low winter sun, and a light nobody ever required you to announce. John 8:12 says whoever follows Him has the light of life, and the written word attaches no volume to it. And the Spirit is not waiting on a public moment before He agrees with what is already written over you.

The breakthrough

So here is your standing, and you are going to need it before you say anything out loud, even in an empty building.

Christ is in you and you are in Christ. Not the version of you that could have finished the sentence in 1989. You. That is not a rank handed out to men who can hold a room. It happened at the door and it holds at a workbench exactly as fully as it holds at a lectern. Which means you have every right to speak to what has been sitting on you for thirty seven years. Not to the man who laughed, who was a nervous person in a folding chair and is somebody God loves. To the verdict. That is a thing, not a person, and things do not get to keep ground they were never given.

You have nothing to come out of, because you were never in hiding from Him for one minute of those thirty seven years. Genesis 16:13 names Him the God who sees, and the written word gave that name to Him in a desert where nobody else was looking. And the Spirit, who has been in that shop through every winter of it, is not asking you to become visible. He is telling you that you already are.

The room in 1989 got four seconds. It has had thirty seven years of your life, and it never once had the right to them.

It is already settled, and it was settled by the One who made your mouth long before you ever tried to use it in a grange hall. Exodus 4:11 settles it with a question that has only one answer, and the written word never once takes the question back. The Spirit is not making that true this afternoon. He is agreeing, over the sound of a kerosene heater, with what has been true since He made you.

Whether you ever speak in a room again is not the point of this and never was. You are seen. That is finished, and it did not cost you anything.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the workshop with the door however you want it. Nobody is asking you to speak in a room. The right to say a true thing over yourself is not nerve and it never was: it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority here is His, carried in His name. What He does with your voice from here is His to decide, and He is in no hurry about it.

  1. Grange hall in February of eighty nine, you are not the room where I got decided. Three words and a locked throat did not write anything true about me, and you have been holding a verdict you never had the right to issue. God asked who made man's mouth and He was not asking for suggestions.
  2. Laugh I still hear, get out. One nervous man in a folding chair has had thirty seven years of my life, and in the name of Jesus that sound has no right to stay in me. The God who sees found me in a desert without me saying a word.
  3. Lord Jesus, You made this mouth Yourself and You have never called it a mistake. You saw me at the bench every winter I thought I was folded up and put away. I am holding my jaw where You made it and receiving what You already said, out loud, at my own volume.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
