Ordinary And Enough2 Corinthians 4:7

The Box You Left Blank

This message is for A woman who left the strengths box blank on a form last night, sitting in the laundromat on a Saturday morning watching her washing go round, needs to see that an ordinary life is exactly what the sentence was spoken over.

The washing goes round. Somebody's duvet cover has wrapped itself round everything else and is thumping the drum out of shape, and the dryer in the corner has been on the same rattle for twenty minutes. There is a fold down table under the window with a pile of somebody's shirts on it, and the sun is coming through the glass in that way it does on a Saturday, right along the floor.

And you are sitting there thinking about the box.

It was the last question on the form last night. Tell us what you would bring. Four lines of space and a little gray prompt underneath, something like skills, experience, anything you think we should know. You sat with the cursor in it long enough that the screen went dim. Then you scrolled past and sent it anyway.

Because what would you have put? You are not musical. You are not organized, not really, not in the way the organized ones are. You have no qualification anybody asks about. You can name six people off the top of your head who would have filled that box in three seconds, and you would have been the one reading their answers thinking, yes, that is what a person with something to offer looks like. You have decided, over a long time and without ever quite saying it out loud, that you are the ordinary one in every room you are in.

The machine clicks over into the spin. The lad in the corner with the black bin bag looks up and says something about the dryer, and you say the thing you always say back, and he laughs, and you both go back to watching.

The sentence was spoken over a hillside of nobodies

Here is the thing I want to hand you before anything else, and it is not a compliment. You are light. Present tense, already, sitting on a plastic chair in a laundromat with nothing in your box. That is not my opinion of you; it is what is written, and the Spirit is the one making it land while the dryer rattles.

Now notice who Jesus said it to. It was not a room of gifted people. It was a hillside crowd: fishermen, day laborers, mothers with children pulling at them, people from villages nobody had heard of, and not one of them had done anything for Him yet. He did not say you could become the light of the world. He did not say the impressive among you are. He looked at that crowd and stated a fact about them, before the ministry, before the courage, before anything went on any form.

Which means ordinary was never the obstacle. Ordinary was the material.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.2 Corinthians 4:7

Read that with the laundromat in front of you. A jar of clay is not a precious object. It is the cheapest thing in the house, the one you do not think about, the one nobody would list. Paul says that is deliberate. The plainness of the container is not a problem God is working around; it is the reason the container was chosen, so that when light comes out of an ordinary life nobody in the room mistakes where it came from.

You have this treasure. Not you could have it, not you might qualify for it. You have it, and the word says the plainness of the jar is the point rather than the failure, and His Spirit is the one who put the treasure in it.

Nothing in you had to be impressive first

I am not going to tell you there is something remarkable in you that you have been overlooking. That is the standard move and it is flattery, and flattery would leave you exactly where you started, still measuring, only now with a nicer number.

The truth is better than flattery and it is also plainer. You are ordinary. So was the crowd on the hillside. So was the fisherman who could not keep his mouth shut and the tax collector nobody liked. What changed for them was not that a hidden greatness got discovered. What changed was who was standing in the middle of them, and the written record is careful about that in a way we usually are not. It never upgrades the people. It names the One among them, and it is the Spirit who makes that difference visible from the outside.

So when you look at that blank box, understand what actually happened there. The form asked you to list what you produce, and there is no line on any form for what you carry. Those are two different questions and you answered the first one honestly. Nothing about you had to be impressive first, because the light was never generated by you, and a lamp has never once been asked to manufacture what it shines.

And here is the part I really want you to have, because it is where the weight comes off. You are not failing to shine. Not in this laundromat, not at that job, not on the days you say almost nothing to anybody. The Spirit is not standing behind you with a clipboard, and the word Jesus used was not an instruction, it was a description. What is written over you is settled, and you cannot underperform a fact.

So here is what I want left standing when the machine finishes its cycle. You are not too ordinary for the sentence, and you were never the reason it might not apply to you. The treasure is in earthen vessels, 2 Corinthians 4:7, written that way so the excellency of the power would be seen as God's and not ours. The Spirit settles that into an ordinary Saturday without needing you to be interesting first.

The breakthrough

So you can put the measuring down, and you can do it here, in this room, before the cycle finishes.

You have the standing to speak about yourself the way God speaks about you, and that standing was not earned on a form. It was given to you when Christ took you into Himself, and the word in front of you now is the same word the Spirit has used on every ordinary person who ever thought the sentence was meant for somebody more interesting.

What is asked of you is not a burst of self belief. It is smaller and it is already available: one thing said out loud, on purpose, toward the thing that has been telling you what you are. Jesus made it very clear that the moving of a mountain does not run on the size of what you can summon, and that the way it works is that you speak to it rather than think about it. So speak to the box. Speak to the conclusion. Out loud, in your ordinary voice, in your ordinary week.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud where you are. Nothing in them is manufactured: the light was given to you by Christ and the standing to speak is His, Scripture holds the words up and the Spirit is the one who makes them live. What He does with an ordinary Saturday is His, and His timing is not something anybody here would presume to describe. We say what is true. He does the rest.

  1. Blank box on the form, you are not a verdict on my life and you never had the vocabulary for it. God put His treasure in ordinary clay on purpose, and what I carry does not fit on a line on a page.
  2. Conclusion that ordinary means unneeded, you are not what Scripture says and you do not speak for God about me. The light in me is Christ's and He picked the jar Himself, and in the name of Jesus I am finished agreeing with you.
  3. Lord, You are the light and I am the lamp, and You have never once asked a lamp to make its own. You have put Yourself in something completely ordinary, and I am carrying You into a laundromat on a Saturday morning without apologizing for the jar.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
