Ordinary And Enough1 Samuel 16:7

The Leftovers

This message is for sitting on the sea wall at six in the evening after a shift, thirty four, nothing on the wall at home, sure everybody in your family got something and you got the leftovers

The sea wall at the end of Wharf Street holds the day's heat until about half past seven, and Nate has been sitting on the same twelve feet of it after work for most of eleven years.

He comes off the loading dock at the cold store a little after six, still carrying the smell of the freezer in his jacket, walks the four blocks down past the tackle shop, and sits with his boots hanging over the water. He is thirty four. He watches the harbor lights come on, one, then two, then the whole string of them out along the breakwater, and while they are coming on he does the arithmetic he has done a thousand times and never once said out loud.

His mother's hallway has photographs down both walls.

His sister in a gown, holding the rolled paper, squinting into the sun. His brother standing on the deck of the boat the week he bought it, one hand on the rail like a man in a magazine. His cousin in uniform. His other cousin with the trophy from the regional, which nobody in the family can name the sport of anymore, but the frame is still up. There is a wedding. There are two babies. There is his grandfather in black and white, standing in front of a store that has not existed since before Nate was born.

And there is Nate at nine. School photo, gap in his teeth, hair combed wrong.

That is the whole record. After nine, nothing.

He is not bitter about it. That is the part he could not explain to anybody, so he has never tried. He loves his sister. He was on the dock the day his brother brought the boat in and he was the one who caught the line. He is glad. He is genuinely, uncomplicatedly glad for all of them, and underneath the gladness sits a small flat stone of a thought he has never once managed to move: everybody got something, and I got the leftovers.

Not a tragedy. Nothing to complain about. He has work. He has a truck that starts. He has a room he rents from a woman who does not raise it. He has the wall at the end of Wharf Street at six in the evening and the heat coming up out of the stone into the backs of his legs. It is a fine life. It just is not a life anybody hangs on a wall.

Last Tuesday his niece Ana came and sat down beside him with her school bag still on. She is fifteen. She did not say anything for a while. Then she said, this is where you come, and he said, this is where I come. She looked out at the breakwater lights the way he does, one, then two, then the string of them, and she said, it is better than our house.

He said, your house is fine.

She said, I know. And then, after a minute, she said, I just like it when you are not talking.

He laughed. He did not know what to do with that, so he laughed, and she stayed until it got dark, and then they walked back up Wharf Street together, and he did not think about it again until the middle of the night, when he thought about it for an hour and a half and then decided it did not mean anything.

What a hallway can actually hold

A wall of photographs is a record of outcomes. That is all it has ever been. It holds the moments in a family that happened to be photographable: a gown, a boat, a uniform, a day somebody thought to bring a camera. It does not hold eleven years of showing up at six. It does not hold who caught the line. It cannot. It was never built to.

And nobody in that hallway is lying. The frames are honest. They just measure one narrow thing, and a person standing in front of them at Christmas can get the idea that the narrow thing is the whole measure, because it is the only measure hanging up.

You are the light of the world, and you were that on the loading dock before you were ever that in a pew. I am not saying it to cheer you up, and I am not saying it because you have earned a compliment. Jesus said it in Matthew 5:14 to a hillside of fishermen and farmhands who had not done one thing yet, before a single one of them had a story worth framing. It is written and it holds. And the Holy Spirit is not standing back waiting for a hallway to change before He agrees with it.

There is a scene in Scripture that is almost embarrassing in how exactly it lands here. A prophet comes to a house to look at the sons. The father brings them out one at a time, oldest first, tallest first, and the prophet keeps thinking, this is the one, this has to be the one, look at him. And each time the answer comes back no.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

Seven sons. Seven. And the eighth was not even called in for the dinner. He was out with the animals, because somebody had to be, and nobody in that house thought to send for him, and it did not occur to a single person there that leaving him out was a decision.

You were looked at, all the way through, long before anybody hung anything on a wall. That is what 1 Samuel 16:7 is actually doing. It is not a verse about promotion, and I am not telling you a crown is on the way. It is a verse about eyesight. It says the looking God does and the looking a family does are two different activities that happen to use the same word. The Spirit does not argue you into that. He seats it, quietly, while you sit on cold stone with your boots over the water.

Where the light in you came from

Here is the thing that keeps this from turning into flattery, and it matters, because flattery is what most people brace for when somebody starts talking kindly to them about themselves.

The light is not you. It never was. You are not secretly remarkable, there is no hidden greatness in you that the family failed to notice, and I am not here to tell you the frames got you wrong. Ordinary was always the material. It was the material on that hillside, it was the material in that house with the seven sons, and it is the material at the end of Wharf Street. God has never once worked with anything else, because there has never been anything else to work with.

You have a light in you that you did not strike and cannot run down. John 8:12 has Jesus saying that He is the light of the world. Matthew 5:14 has Him turning to a crowd of nobodies and saying the same sentence over them. Both are written, and neither cancels the other, because the second is only true on account of the first. What the Spirit adds is that the second one is about you, tonight, in a jacket that still smells like the freezer.

Which means the hallway was never the meter. It could not have been. A meter reads the thing it was built to read, and that wall was built to read outcomes, and light is not an outcome. Light is a source and a state. A lamp is not brighter on the day somebody photographs it.

You are lit by Christ, and you were lit by Christ through every one of the eleven years nobody wrote down. His word said that first. The same Spirit is saying it again now, at six in the evening, on a wall that still holds the heat from the afternoon.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is smaller and better than the one you were braced for.

Nothing has to be added to you. There is no promotion coming that will finally make the wall accurate, and you do not need one, because that wall was answering a question God never asked. It is already settled, and it was settled without anybody in your family voting on it. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hid with Christ in God, which is the strangest and most restful sentence in the whole business: the real thing about you is not on display and is not up for review. The Spirit is not working to get you noticed. He is agreeing, right now, with what is written.

The flat stone of a thought can go. It does not have to be carried up Wharf Street for another eleven years, and it does not have to be argued with either.

You have what your sister has and what your brother has, because it was never handed out by the frame. The word says a lamp gives light to everyone in the house, and it does not add, only the ones who got photographed. The same Spirit who rested on a shepherd nobody called in for dinner is resting on a man on a sea wall, and He is not doing it as a consolation.

Ana was not being polite, by the way. Fifteen year olds are not polite. She said the true thing and then she said the truer thing right after it, and neither one of them is ever going in a frame.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the wall or in the truck, whichever comes first. This is not talking yourself into a better mood. The authority in these lines is not yours by temperament and it does not rise or fall with how the shift went. It is Christ's, and it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is something His word settled and not something you achieved. He moves in His own way and on His own clock, and the outcome is His. Your part is only to say back what was written first.

  1. Sea wall at six in the evening, you are not the scale I get weighed on. The Lord looks at the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7 says so, and He was reading me long before this town started counting. I am lit by Christ and I always was.
  2. Idea that I got the leftovers, get out, in the name of Jesus. You have had eleven years of my evenings and you have no right to stay another one. The Lord settled what He thinks of me before the first frame ever went up on that wall.
  3. Father, You are the One who lights the ones nobody sends for at dinner. Your word says light is what I am, and I am done arguing with You about it. I am sitting here with my hands open, taking what You already gave.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
